North of Zanzibar, Pemba has been famous for
centuries for its clove production. Today, the Pemba Channel (
2400ft deep) which separates the island from the continent, has become
undisputably the best place for deep sea fishing, because it is here that
the biggest catch, on East African coast has been made. Pemba also has
pristine great reefs and a variated fauna including the great white shark
and giant turtles.
Best time: whole year but ideal period from September to
March.
How to get there: From Zanzibar, a 1h 30 hydrofoil crossing or a
20 minute flight, and also by boat from Tanga and Pangaini.
To
do: An excursion to the primeval forest of Ngezi for a walk through
the luxuriant vegetation with its giant trees, ferns and endemic species.
A minibus or a motorcycle ride along the East coast to visit the
archaeological sites and the baobab forest of micheweni.
Do not
miss: a dhow or pirogue outing to the creeks or to small islands. A
feast of lobsters, fish, fruit and species.
