NAIROBI
CITY TOURS:
Founded at the turn of the century, Nairobi has grown
from small railroad town to a large cosmopolitan city
with a population approaching two million. Much is to
be seen around the capital.
The Nairobi
Museum has numerous exhibits of the late Dr. Leakey's
great finds, a collection of original artifacts from
Kenyan tribes and a superb collection of mounted birds.
Adjacent to the Museum is the Snake Park and the Aviary.
The Railway
Museum is a must for visitors interested in the country's
history as well as National Assembly (Parliament), Branch
at the Jamia mosque and also view the Macmillan Memorial
library. You could also visit the view point at the
Uhuru Park.
To conclude
the tour, you branch at the Municipal City Market where
you can purchase a couple of beautiful souvenirs.
KAREN
BLIXEN:
The Karen Blixen Museum was originally the home of Karen
Blixen, who came to Kenya from Denmark in the early
part of the 19th century; the present museum site is
at the heart of the larger coffee plantation run by
Blixen between 1914 and 1931. The house and surrounding
land was donated by the Danish government to Kenya at
independence; the house was restored by the Danish government
and was used during the filming of Out of Africa, which
immortalized Karen Blixen's book by the same name.
Much of the
original furniture is on display in the house, and combined
with the beautifully landscaped gardens and encompassing
view of the Ngong Hills, the Museum has continued to
be very popular destination for international and local
visitors.
The original
kitchen has been restored and is now open for viewing.
A Dove Stove similar to the one used by Blixen is on
display, as are other period kitchen utensils.
Daily
at 1:30PM
An afternoon orientation drive that will take you through
Kenya's modern, high- capital to the area of Karen Blixen's
Farm at the foot of the Ngong hills. Visit the fascinating
Museum dedicated to the Author of "Out of Africa."
Have time to feed the gentle Rothschild’s Giraffe at
the Giraffe Centre. Afterwards admire authentic African
Art and Craft at Utamaduni and drive back to your town
Hotel.
CARNIVORE
EXPERIENCE:
Nairobi has many restaurants offering a variety of cuisines.
We recommend a dinner or lunch at the Carnivore restaurant
Carnivore
is famous for its succulent steaks and barbecued dishes
as an excellent compliment to a holiday in Kenya, especially
as a welcome or farewell dinner.
In the style
of a Brazilian churrasceria, 6 km from the city centre,
the carnivore restaurant is a popular spot for meat
lovers. Joints of lamb, beef, pork and venison are roasted
on an open spit and curved from spears at your table.
BOMAS
OF KENYA:
Typically, this is a cultural tour that exposes you
to Kenya's 16 major tribes i.e. Kikuyu, Luo, Kamba,
etc. ’Bomas’ is linguistically used to refer to villages
and is hence a Kiswahili word. It has numerous homesteads
reflecting Kenya's cocktail of cultures. Bomas of Kenya
is a cultural center a short drive from the city centre
where visitors can watch displays of traditional dancing
by groups from the main tribes of Kenya.
The tour
departs at 14:00 hrs till 17:00 hrs.
NAIROBI
NATIONAL PARK:
Nairobi, as a capital city, is unique in having a wildlife
park on its doorstep. It is possible to photograph a
rhino, browsing peacefully amongst the whistling thorn
with high rise buildings in the background !
Some of the
wildlife is migratory and when there is grazing and
water outside the park it moves out into Maasai-Land
through the unfenced southern boundary. But there is
also a resident population of plains game and carnivores
so a visit at any time of the year is rewarding.
The tour
departs at 14:00 hrs till 18:00 hrs.
Nairobi
National Park/Shedrick animal orphanage/Bomas of Kenya.
A safari in Nairobi National Park, only 13 km (eight
miles) from the city centre. Lion and Cheetah roam in
sight of Mts. Kenya and Kilimanjaro and beneath airplanes
on their approach to the international Airport. Monkeys,
buffalo and several species of plains’ game abound.
Pick from
your hotel at 6:30am and proceed to Nairobi national
park for game drives until 10:30am. Proceed for Sheldrick
Elephant Orphanage which opens their gates from 11:00am
to 1200 noon. In the park is the Animal Orphanage where
sick, wounded and abandoned animals are cared for and
rehabilitated into the park, as well as an Educational
Centre
featuring a Safari Walk. Close by is the Sheldrick Elephant
Orphanage, where infant elephant and rhino (orphaned
because of poaching activities) are cared for and eventually
returned to the wild in Tsavo National Park. The centre
is open every morning and visitors can watch the calves
bathing in the mud hole and being bottle fed by their
human surrogate mothers. At
1230hrs you will be driven for lunch at a place of your
choice. Later be taken to Bomas of Kenya for an insight
to the cultural lives of the tribes of Kenya.
Inclusive:
Transport and entrance fee.
Excludes: Lunch
and optional activities not mentioned in the program.
AMBOSELI
NATIONAL PARK:
BACKGROUND
INFORMATION.
Amboseli National Park lies immediately North West of
Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania. Amboseli
was established as a reserve in 1968 and gazette as
a National Park in 1974. The Park covers 392 km2, and
forms part of the much larger 3,000 Km2 Amboseli ecosystem.
Large concentrations of wildlife occur here in the dry
season, making Amboseli a popular tourist destination.
It is surrounded by 6 communally owned group ranches.
The National Park embodies 5 main wildlife habitats
(open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country,
swamps and marshland) and covers part of a Pleistocene
lake basin, now dry.
Within this
basin is a temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, that floods
during years of heavy rainfall. Amboseli is famous for
its big game and its great scenic beauty - the landscape
is dominated by MT Kilimanjaro.
LOCATION:
On the border with Tanzania, Kajiado District, South
Kenya; Covers 392km2
CLIMATE:
The climate is mainly hot and dry. Amboseli is in the
rain shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The maximum average
temperature of the warmest month is 33°C during
the day, while that of the coldest is 27-28°C. An
annual rainfall of 300mm per annum is distributed in
two seasons: April/May and November/December. Recurrent
droughts and potential evaporation of 2200mm per annum
typifies the region (KWS, 1991).
MAJOR
ATTRACTIONS:
View Mt. Kilimanjaro
View Mt. Meru
Observation Hill which allows an overall view of the
whole park especially the swamps and elephants, Contemporary
Maasai culture and indigenous lifestyle
WILDLIFE:
Reptiles
Python, Turtles, Tortoise, Black Mamba, Cobra.
Insects/arthropods, Scorpions, Butterflies, Dragon flies,
May flies, Grasshopper.
COMMON VEGETATION:
The national park embodies several types of semi-arid
vegetation and swampland/marshland. In general there
is a gradient of vegetation from the bare lake bed,
through grassland to Acacia woodland following a North
-North West to South - South East pattern sandwiching
the permanent swamps.
Water flowing underground from Mt. Kilimanjaro up wells
in a series of lush swamps and marshland which support
sedges of Cyprus spp., including Cyprus papyrus and
that provide dry season water and forage for wildlife.
These swamps are flanked by tracts of acacia woodland
with yellow-barked acacia, Acacia xanthophyllous and
Acacia tortillas. Acacia tortillas also occurs in the
southern part of the park along on drainage lines.
The basin is surrounded by acacia/commiphora bush land
while the level floor of open plains with saline/alkaline
soils supports thickets of Salvadoran persica and Suaeda
monoica. Grasses include needlegrass Aristida, fingergrass
Digitaria, dropseed Sporobolus sp., stargrass Cynodon
dactylon, and Phragmites Mauritian us. Balanites aegyptiaca
is important as a source of edible fruits, while the
pods of Acacia tortillas are eaten by livestock.
There has been a tremendous loss of woody vegetation
that has been attributed to various factors including
the rise of water table, increase in salinity, off road
driving by tour vehicles and destruction of vegetation
by elephants.

and the rarely found species of wild game ”the stars of
Samburu”.
SAMBURU SAFARI: 3DAYS 2 NIGHTS – WT 46
Samburu National Reserve
In the arid North of Kenya, water means life. The waters
of the great Ewaso Nyiro river draw wildlife in great
numbers to its banks, creating an oasis of green.
This river flows through three great northern reserves,
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. This is spectacular
country, set against a backdrop of the mighty Mountain
Ol Olokwe.
The verdant
reverie forest is a stark contrast to the arid thorn
studded plains. Samburu is visited by large herds of
Elephants, drawn by the promise of water. In the dry
season, the elephants use their tusks to dig deep into
the dry river beds, unearthing precious water. These
waterholes then become a focal point for other game.
The Samburu
region is the best place to find several endemic Northern
species, including Gerenuk, the Reticulated Giraffe,
and Grevys Zebra. Lions are also frequently seen on
the riverbanks, and Cheetah can be found on the open
plains. On rare occasion, packs of African Hunting Dogs
are sighted passing through the reserve. The entire
Samburu region is a place of breathtaking and magical
beauty, a place where the vision of a deep red sunset
silhouetting the doum palms along the river as a leopard
emerges to hunt brings the perfect end to a day on safari.

SWEET
WATERS GAME RESERVE- SAFARIS
Nestled between
Mt. Kenya to the east and the Aberdares Mountains to
the west, Sweetwater’s Game Reserve is a privately held
reserve covering some 24,000 acres. You stay in tents
adjacent to a waterhole, which provides for a constant
procession of animals taking their turn at the precious
resource.
The reserve
boasts a plethora of wildlife - over 400 species of
birds, lion, elephant, rhino and cheetah to name just
a few. Moran, a black rhino, was rescued as a baby after
he was found wandering near his mother who had been
killed by poachers in Amboseli National Park. After
having been taken to three or four other locations where
unfortunately his safety was put at risk by both the
presence of poachers and attacks by other rhinos, Moran
came to Sweetwater’s where he lives in his own 100-acre
enclosure, protected 24-hours by armed guards.
Also at Moran’s
Boma (which means "warrior" in Masai) you
will find Carol, a tame warthog. Carol was brought to
the Sanctuary when she was found abandoned by her mother
on the Ranch, and she lives in a smaller enclosure near
Moran. She often ambles around the compound, and loves
to greet visitors personally.
A 200-acre
Chimpanzee sanctuary has been set up at Sweetwater’s
Game Reserve. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute
boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among
the chimps is a must. The aim of the project, initiated
by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the
Jane Good all Institute, was to set up a colony where
chimps could be introduced, rehabilitated and taught
to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural
living conditions. Priority is given to orphaned and
abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 24 chimps,
including two babies born in the Sanctuary. An information
centre near the chimps' enclosure gives you amazing
insight into the chimpanzees - did you know that they
have 98.6% of our genes? After walking through the vast
information and chimp paraphernalia you leave the center
with the feeling that you must do something to stop
this tragic "chimp trade".
